Recipe Rock Holder Great for Recipes, Studying

The Recipe Rock makes following recipes easy.
Photo: breadtopia.com

The Recipe Rock is the contemporary version of the clunky big recipe holder. In addition it can be used to display homework for easier studying or used for anything else you’d like to read hands-free. In keeping up with the times, the Recipe Rock is designed to hold internet printouts – up to 8 pages. With over 70% of cooks reporting they use the internet over cookbooks, this small 2” rock is fulfilling a modern-day need.

I am one of those cooks who scour the internet for dinner recipes. When cooking, I lay the printouts on the counter while I prepare the recipe. Inevitably the sheet gets splattered with ingredients, and I end up having to throw it out.

A sleek modern design sets the
Recipe Rock apart from other
recipe holders.
Photo: breadtopia.com
When I tried the Recipe Rock, I was weary if it could hold a piece of paper without the sheet bending over. To my surprise, it held the printout vertically at the perfect viewing angle. The papers are held by a strong magnetic ball; it can also grip thicker recipe note card. After completing the recipe, I was thankful that the Recipe Rock was compact enough to easily store in my cabinet without cluttering it.

At $9.99, the Recipe Rock is the perfect affordable gift for moms and their families. The Recipe Rock is available at Crate and Barrel, a few specialty boutiques and online stores (like breadtopia.com).

For more info: Architec Housewares produces the Recipe Rock. The manufacturer is well known for its fresh modern take on classic housewares. View its website at www.architecproducts.com.

“We will put them on the back of the bus where they belong!” Racist Tactics Used in Election Campaign

Democrat Solages is challenging
Republican incumbent Ciotti.
Photo: carrie4nassau.com
With elections taking place next Tuesday, candidates are campaigning aggressively to sway voters. Sometimes tactics go too far, as seen in an ugly event occurring earlier this month between two opponents in Long Island - John Ciotti, an eight-term incumbent seeking reelection to represent the 3rd Legislative District in Nassau County, and Carrié Solages, a Democrat from Elmont who is challenging Ciotti.

Before delving into the details I am disclosing that I cannot vote in the Nassau elections (I do not live in that county), so I am not here to sway political votes. I am merely calling out an unbelievably racist incident that occurred locally.

The Video
Two Ciotti campaign volunteers traveled to Solages’ headquarters with a mission to intimidate. Solages’ sister caught the entire racist and sexist episode on video. The men, led by Vinnie Prisco, first post Ciotti election signs onto Solages’ headquarters. When Solages’ sister informed them it was private property, Prisco responded, "Go ahead, take 'em down," and taunted, “I'm gonna wait here for you to take 'em down."

Among the other grievances made by the men:
  • Obscene gesture made to Solages’ sister
  • Called Solages’ sister a pig
  • Exclaimed, “Call animal control so we can arrest ‘em”
  • Announced, “Don’t worry, we will put them on the back of the bus where they belong.”

With children and families on the sidewalk observing the incident, the men seemed to revel in this - after all, the bystanders were Black just like Solages.

The brazen Prisco enjoyed the video attention, looking at the camera and jeering, “What channel are you going to put it on so we could watch it later?"

Inside the Holiday Hot 20 Picks – Interview with The Toy Insider

The Toy Insider recently announced its sixth annual Hot 20 toys for the 2011 holiday season. The Hot 20 is a feature section within The Toy Insider’s recommendations of over 110 toys. The Toy Insider provides parents with a thorough gift-giving guide, breaking down recommendations by both genders and age groups. The toys, from over 80 manufacturers, represent all price points to fit parents’ budgetary needs.

The Toy Insider's Hot 20 Age Breakdown
Image: toyinsider.com

The Toy Book, and Laurie Schacht, co-publisher of The Toy Insider and Contributing Toy Editor to Woman’s Day, led a team of toy trend specialists to create the guide.

In my interview with the proud mompreneur, Laurie explains how the guides originated and what goes into creating The Toy Insider and Hot 20 picks.

“I was brought up in the toy industry; my dad was publisher of Toy & Hobby World magazine,” states Laurie, “He started The Toy Book, a publication for the trade industry. The Toy Insider, for consumers, was created six years ago - I realized there was a gap to fill to help parents, to recommend toys by age. We’re an independent source for parents to review. We are not a retailer; in fact we do no selling at all. After reviewing the toys, we give a lot to charity.”

The process behind the holiday toy recommendations is comprehensive. Laurie reveals, “We spend a full year looking at toys. In this year’s Toy Insider we feature 110 toys from over 80 manufacturers. We have a panel of toy experts who reviews each toy. Each reviewer is a parent and has children ranging from infants to teens. We also talk to the toy companies as well as receive input from kids through sites like KidzVuz.com.”

She continues, “For The Toy Insider and Hot 20, we look for toys that are new for this year, toys that are engaging (not ‘watch me’ toys). We try to find an equal amount of recommendations for each gender as well as find gender neutral toys. We consider the price/value and try to cover all categories of toys – plush, technology, etc. We also pinpoint trends.”

Speaking of trends, Laurie elaborates: “Trends include collectibles such as portable mini figures like Squinkies and affordable collection items like Redakai trading cards. Another trend is face to face game play like Scene It Harry Potter which features all eight movies and Paper Jamz microphones where kids can be social with friends. Toys that keep kids active (performance play) are popular, such as the Lazer Stunt Chaser car racer which follows a laser beam, speeds on ramps, travels through loops, etc. There are also great things for little kids such as the Pocoyo Swiggie Traks which is adorable – it’s simple, and kids learn to connect things.”

Laurie observes that now toy companies are using tech smartly, not just for the sake of it. In addition to apps and video games, another noted toy is Lite Sprites. “It uses cool technology, kids can control how it captures light, and it’s affordable,” says Laurie, “Singing interactive toys like Let’s Rock Elmo is another example. A kid can hold a guitar (sold separately as an Elmo accessory) and Elmo will recognize what the child is holding. They can play together.”

Regarding future projects, Laurie keeps mum for now. She mentions a wish list app as well as doing more work online. Given the success she’s seen with The Toy Insider, Hot 20, and more, the toy industry can feel confident more great things are to come from this vivacious mompreneur.

For more info: Nearly all of The Toy Insider picks are available at Walmart stores nationwide and on Walmart.com. For more information on availability, please visit www.thetoyinsider.com . The HOT 20 is the kick-off section of The Toy Insider which will run in full in the November 17, 2011 issue of Woman’s Day magazine, on newsstands November 1, 2011.

Thousands of dolls exist in the marketplace, but one that stands out for introducing a global outlook and incorporating social responsibility is Hearts For Hearts Girls by Playmate Toys Inc. The multicultural dolls represent real girls from all over the world who are working to make life better for herself, her family, community, and country. Each doll includes a story book that illustrates to young girls how their peers live in other countries.

View the Hearts For Hearts Girls 30 second video.

Hearts For Hearts Girls are beautifully dressed in attire specific to their regions. Each one measures 14” tall, a new size in the doll world. The six international dolls include:
  • Consuelo (Mexico)
  • Dell (United States)
  • Lillian (Belarus - Russia)
  • Nahji (India)
  • Rahel (Ethiopia)
  • Tipi (Laos)

The Hearts For Hearts Girls represent six countries.

Bicultural Mama inquired about the unique countries chosen to represent some of the Hearts For Hearts Girls. For instance, many doll companies would have automatically chosen larger and more well-known countries such as China to represent the Asian doll.

Gina Beebe, Senior Vice President of Girls Marketing at Playmate Toys Inc. answered, “We looked at the global map and wanted to spread throughout it to have a presence in all different areas. For example, we wanted to have an Asian presence so we looked at countries in Asia that were both rich in culture and also under deserved. Laos is a country that many people are not aware of, so representing a young girl from here helps bring attention to the area.”

To highlight social responsibility, Playmates Toys Inc. is donating a portion of each doll sale to non-profit organizations that serve the regions that the Hearts for Hearts Girls dolls represent.
The toy industry has recognized Hearts for Hearts Girls, naming the doll line to Dr. Toy’s 10 Best Socially Responsible Products List just a few weeks ago.

Girls can explore the kid-safe Hearts for Hearts Girls website (www.heartsforheartsgirls.com) that features games, activities, and real stories about girls from around the world. To unlock the online membership field, kids simply type in the special code included with each doll purchase.

Hearts For Hearts Girls retails for $29.99 and is available at major retailers such as Target, Toys ‘R Us, and Amazon.com.

Industry-Wide Changes of Infant Dosing Amounts – Don’t Overmedicate!

Effective immediately, every manufacturer of infants’ acetaminophen products (such as Tylenol) is changing its concentration of acetaminophen. The purpose of this industry-wide change is to standardize dosing across products to reduce medication errors.

SAFETY WARNING: New directions exist so parents need to read the package carefully as retailers may still be selling a mix of the old and new products. The old versions are 3x more concentrated than the new. If parents accidentally use the new product directions with the old drops, the infant may overdose leading to possible liver damage.

Old Concentration: 80 mg per 0.8 ml

New Concentration: 160 mg per 5 ml

The dosing dropper may also change in the new version of infants’ acetaminophen products. Always use the original dosing device included in the package when giving medication.

For children less than 2 years old, consult your doctor for dosing amounts. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children, and never give adult medication to children.

What is the Value of a Child’s Life in China?

A van runs over a 2 year old girl in Foshan, China. The driver pauses and continues, rolling over her again with his back wheels. Moments later a truck comes by and drives over the limp body. While appalling, what’s even more shameful is that 18 onlookers did nothing [Watch the video here – warning, it’s graphic].

>> UPDATE 10/21/11: "Chinese Toddler Dies After No One Stops to Help" by Grace Hwang Lynch of BlogHer

The toddler is declared brain dead after two hit and run
accidents in Foshan, China.
Photo: china.org.cn
The first driver was later apprehended and explained why he didn’t stop during the incident last Thursday. According to one report, “If she is dead, I may pay only about 20,000 yuan ($3,125). But if she is injured, it may cost me hundreds of thousands yuan." With the average Chinese salary equivalent to only $10,000 per year, killing someone is cheaper than injuring the person.

What happened to all the Good Samaritans who could have at least stopped traffic or called an ambulance after the girl was hit? China's court system has reinforced an attitude of indifference, thus discouraging people from helping others. In a much publicized 2006 case, a man helped an elderly woman who broke her hip after getting knocked down while boarding a bus. Realizing a money making opportunity, the woman sued the Good Samaritan and accused him of causing her injury. The Chinese court sided with the woman, reasoning that the man would not have come to her aid had he not caused the fall.

In a country of 1.341 billion people, the value of a human life has become just a number. When I visited China years ago, my Shanghai tour guide mentioned how thousands of pedestrians died each year from vehicles hitting them. I exclaimed that the number seemed high. He retorted, “A few thousand isn’t a big deal in a city of 22 million.”

While human life in general appears devalued in China, it’s especially tragic for children who cannot fend for themselves. Kidnapped children are forced to work as slave laborers in illegal brickwork and mines. Tainted infant formula injures and kills babies. Or a van rolls over a toddler while people watch and continue on.

The common link through all of these scenarios is money. In the U.S., one of the grievances of the Occupy Wall Street movement is the widening gap between the rich and poor. In China, this divide is even sharper, driving people to shut off human empathy for the sake of gaining or retaining money.

Cultural norms also influence attitudes towards children. According to Confucian philosophy, filial piety (respect for elders) is a virtue to be held above everything else. I once read an article about differing cultural attitudes towards the elderly and children in China versus the U.S. The study asked, “If you were lost at sea and could only save one person, would you save your child or your mother?” Americans overwhelmingly chose saving the child, reasoning that the child still had his whole life to live whereas the mother had already lived hers. The Chinese response was the opposite – save the mother out of respect because you could always have another child.

To be fair many Chinese have likewise expressed outrage at the injustices towards their fellow citizens. It is also true that other countries including the U.S. have had their own issues, to varying degrees, regarding treatment of children. But as the saying goes, “Just because others do it doesn’t make it right.” Each life is unique and irreplaceable, but unfortunately selfishness on the part of some results in the demise of others.

Time to Play magazine’s 2011 Holiday Showcase featured over 35 toy manufacturers, including Hasbro, Disney, Lego, Mattel, and more. The NYC event introduced the hottest new toys to journalists, writers, and bloggers covering the toy industry.

At the press event, Time to Play announced its Most Wanted toys list for the holidays. The magazine reviewed hundreds of toys to compile the list, many which were exhibited at the event. I visited every table at the event, and listed below are highlights from the Holiday Showcase.

Ways to Treat Not Nice Lice

The new school year means fresh cases of lice.
Photo: flickr/l.i.l.l.i.a.n
Finding out your child is infected with lice is a parent’s worst nightmare. The second is finding out someone in your child’s class has lice. After picking through your child’s hair with literally a fine tooth comb, hopefully no lice was found. Parents then usually go into prevention mode.

This happened when I was in grade school – someone in my class was a lice carrier, and my mom bought medicated lice shampoo just in case. Back then (decades ago), only the harsh chemical shampoos were available. Not only did it smell awful and burn my scalp, but for about a year afterward my hair’s texture turned coarse and dull.

Katie M., mother of two from Troy, MI, shared a story about how her daughter attended a birthday party with 20 kids and later discovered one of the children had lice. Since many of the kids attended the same school, the parent of the infected child contacted the school who then checked each student – and found 6 more cases of the dreaded bug.

Katie revealed, “A product was circulated around to the Moms - Fairytales Rosemary Repel shampoo and conditioner. I have no idea how well it works, but when you are afraid of getting lice, you'll try anything. The shampoo and conditioner were more expensive than some others, but cheaper than most salon products. They smelled good. It claimed to be organic. If it helped discourage lice bugs - great!”

According to Dr. Sears, parents can treat lice with medicated shampoos, pesticide-free shampoos, and non-medicated treatments.

Medicated shampoos include brands like RID, A-200, Clear, Pronto, R&C, NIX, Ovide, and Lindane (prescription).

Pesticide-Free Shampoos
include Dimethicone (brand name LiceMD). Dr. Sears recommends first trying the pesticide-free route since over the years some lice have become resistant to the medicated shampoos.

Non-medicated treatments
provide a harmless alternative, but are often messy. These work by suffocating lice and their eggs. Just massage into hair, cover with a shower cap, and let it all sit overnight.
  • Olive oil
  • Mayonnaise
  • Petroleum jelly (Vaseline)
In the morning, wash the hair with regular shampoo. The downside is that these can be difficult to rinse out due to their oily bases. As such, Dr. Sears recommends the use of shampoo first.

Do you have any recommendations on how to treat or prevent lice?

Introduce World Cultures to Children with Putumayo Kids

Want to expose children to world cultures, but can’t hop on a plane? Putumayo Kids can help with its fun and informative learning line. Putumayo Kids is the children’s and educational division of Putumayo World Music. Through music, books, and activities, Putumayo Kids introduces culture to children.

A couple years ago, a friend of mine whose two young boys loved this brand of products gave my daughter the Putumayo Kids New Orleans Playground CD. My daughter enjoyed bopping to the festive sounds. I recently had the opportunity to try out some of the new products from the Putumayo Kids line and gladly accepted based on my previous experience with the brand.

    Music CDs

Putumayo Kids has sold over 3 million CDs around the world. More than 1% of CD sales go to non-profit groups that support children, families, schools and other charities – equating to over $1 million dollars contributed so far.

Asian Dreamland is one of the many
    world culture music CDs available
    from Putumayo Kids.

The CDs’ creators chose songs with kid-friendly lyrics and beats by new and established international musicians. Schools and families tested each collection of songs for approval.

The Playground series provides upbeat sounds for dancing and playtime. The Dreamland series calms with its soft and melodic tunes to help soothe and relax children when it is time to unwind.

I listened to the Asian Dreamland CD, a collection of lullabies and soothing songs from Asia. Countries of origin included Japan, China, India and the Republic of Tatarstan. Though many of the songs were sung in native languages, my daughter enjoyed the tunes because beautiful music crosses cultural boundaries.

    Asian Dreamland
retails for $14.98, and a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the CD will be donated to the Worldwide Orphans Foundation.

    Coloring Books
Putumayo Kids coloring books offer 20 oversized generous pages (11.5" x 14"), providing a canvas for kids to express themselves. Coloring books available right now include Africa, Europe, and Latin America.

I reviewed the Europe coloring book, and my daughter enjoyed coloring the people, animals, and musical instruments from Europe. The book also included captions, a map, and a glossary.

The coloring book is printed with eco-friendly soy ink and retails for $11.95.

    Sticker Books
Kids love stickers so Putumayo Kids produced sticker book collections to educate about world cultures. Like the coloring books, the ones available now are Africa, Europe, and Latin America.

The sturdy sticker books include more than 120 stickers.

My daughter enjoyed using the Europe sticker book which was packed with more than 120 colorful, reusable stickers. The sturdy board book (9” x 9”) folded out into a European landscape for the stickers to adhere to. The book included a glossary of European animals and instruments.

Like the coloring books, the sticker books are printed with eco-friendly soy ink and retails for $11.95.

    Interesting Facts
Putumayo Kids has garnered numerous awards and is parent and teacher approved. Organizations that have awarded honors to Putumayo Kids include Parents’ Choice, National Parenting Publication Awards, Teachers’ Choice and the American Library Association.
