Growing up I never saw dolls that looked like me. They all
looked like Barbie or some variation of her, and they made me erroneously
believe that the ideal of beauty looked like these dolls with light hair,
skin and eyes.
Today there are more dolls available (though still not
commonplace) who reflect the changing look of America. This is great for young
girls, like my daughter, who can grow up with dolls who look like them.
Pearlene Fields is an entrepreneur who saw this need as well
and is launching a multicultural dolls brand called Stellar Babies in time
for Christmas. She wanted to bring a fresh new look
to the doll scene that would be fun, diverse and enjoyable without sexualizing
the dolls like some of the ones on the market today.

The story of Stellar Babies is that they are sparkly new baby stars born in space who have fallen to
earth. They are looking for loving caring homes with host families until they
grow up and the time comes for them to return to the sky to light up the night
as beautiful bright stars. Read the full
story HERE.
Each Stellar Babies doll is 15 inches tall with nylon hair
and a body made of plush cotton with plastic armature inside for posing the
body. The dolls have a sound module to sing songs, and each comes with a flashing
star necklace that can also be worn by the child. The dolls come with a host
family certificate, and the child can choose to “adopt” later if they wish to.
Right now Stellar Babies has prototyped a few dolls. I’m
hoping that the doll line will continue to expand to other ethnicities as well.
Fields has created a Supporters will be able to access a doll well in advance of
the rest of the public and will receive gifts of appreciation for different
levels of donation amounts. Please note that for the campaign, no one
will have their credit cards charged unless the funding goal is met.
