A Flu Shot Alternative to the Doctor’s Office

Influenza season is here and it’s time to for each family member to get flu shots. Though doctor offices offer flu shots, perhaps getting an appointment is tough or you don’t have a primary care doctor. That’s why it’s good to know alternative options for getting the flu shot.

Many drugstores offer flu shots and don’t require appointments. One such place is the MinuteClinic at select CVS stores. My husband and I had the opportunity to try out the clinic first hand and receive flu shots at one of these clinics.

The MinuteClinic was located within the CVS store in the back by the pharmacy. A kiosk station with a touch screen computer welcomed us so we could self check-in. We answered a series of questions about why we were there as well as basic health questions like allergies. It was simple to complete, and at the end we could see where we were on the waitlist.

We went on a Sunday so perhaps the MinuteClinic was busier than usual. There was a constant stream of people of all ages checking in. The MinuteClinic covered everything from minor injuries and illnesses to vaccinations and physicals. The MinuteClinic accepted most health insurances, and for those without the kiosk clearly displayed out of pocket costs (for example, a flu shot cost $32).

A nurse practitioner called us into one of two medical rooms. It was equipped with what you’d see at a regular doctor’s office: an examining table, supplies and so forth. The nurse practitioner looked on her computer to view our answers to the preset health questions. She asked a few more questions and then walked us through the procedure. Getting the shot itself only took a few minutes. It was quick and simple! They will give flu shots to not just adults, but also kids.

I would recommend the MinuteClinic as an option not just for flu shots, but also for the treatment of minor health issues because sometimes going to your regular doctor is not an option (like on the weekends when many doctor’s offices are closed).

Make sure you get your flu shot this season…before the flu gets you!

Disclosure: I received two complimentary flu shots to assess the MinuteClinic process first hand. All opinions expressed are solely mine.
