Father’s Day Gifts for the Foodie Dad, Stylish Dad, and Sports Fitness Dad

Daddy deserves a cool gift for Father's Day!

Planning to get another tie for dad for Father’s Day? Avoid generic gifts this year and be creative to surprise dad. Look for gifts in unlikely places that may offer more affordable options than the mall.

One such option is drugstores which can offer surprisingly thoughtful, personalized gifts. Take gift baskets – though they have a reputation for being female-focused, it’s actually easy to pair relevant products to match Dad’s interests. It’s like one-stop-shopping at the drugstore since there are such a variety of items offered.

CVS is a great example. The store offers Father’s Day cards and personalized photo gifts, and also carries tons of products that would be perfect for a Father’s Day gift basket. Here’s a guide for creating a gift basket for the Foodie Dad, Stylish Dad, and Sports/Fitness Dad using items from CVS.

Memorial Day – An Opportunity to Teach Kids

When many people think of Memorial Day, they think of a fun day off with a barbeque, family get togethers, and town parades. Though these do take place, the deeper meaning of this holiday is to honor those who have served in the military. For parents, Memorial Day can be a great way to teach them about remembering those who sacrificed time, their families, and even their lives for their country.

While I do not have any relatives currently active in the military, I do have relatives who have passed on who served their country. My father-in-law served during the Korean War. Though I have never met him, his name is engraved in a town memorial. When my daughter is older, I plan to take her to see it.

Visiting the West Point grave site of my great-grandfather.

My own family’s side has a long history of relatives and ancestors (going back thousands of years) serving in the military in China. Here in the states, my great-grandfather was the first Chinese cadet to graduate from West Point. He is currently buried there where his tombstone is the only one there engraved in both Chinese and English words. Our last family reunion was held in West Point to visit his grave and to honor him.

So let’s honor our service men and women who have given so much for their countries and teach out kids about what Memorial Day is about. Happy Memorial Day!

It’s My Birthday - Number Be Gone, Age is How I Feel

My little one sang "Happy Birthday Mama"
this morning. Love her tons!
Photo: Jessica Lin Photography

As a kid, I remember birthdays representing one of the best days of the year in addition to Christmas. The build up and excitement would start weeks before the actual birthday date. I would anticipate the birthday party, the yummy cake, the friends coming, and of course the gifts I’d receive.

Now as an adult, birthdays are a bit different. Getting older doesn’t seem as cool as it once was when I was a kid. People start reflecting more on their lives – what they’ve accomplished, and the goals they’re still striving for. There’s more of a sense of purpose in these thoughts, especially as one enters “middle age.”

Numbers aside, I remind myself to look at the big picture – to measure myself not by the number, but how I feel. Though I’m not as sprite as I was in my 20’s, I still have a lot of energy and passion for the things that I do. I am told I look a good ten years younger than my actual age (thanks for the genes, mom and dad!). But most of all, I am happy and fulfilled where I am now in my life, and this makes a number less of a factor.

So I’m going to ignore the “middle age” label. And if you’re wondering how old I am, it’s my milestone birthday, the big 4-0!

Tips for Creating Inspiring Environments for Kids and a Tour of HGTV’s 'Home By Novogratz'

This past week I attended a LEGO Friends event at the fabulous New York City home of Robert and Cortney Novogratz from HGTV’s “Home By Novogratz.” Both LEGO Friends and the Novogratz couple strive to promote children’s creativity.

LEGO Friends playset for girls inspires creativity.
Photo: Maria Adcock
LEGO Friends is a new construction play theme targeting girls ages 5 and up. Extensive LEGO research showed that boys and girls played differently when it came to LEGOs.

Both boys and girls felt pride when completing a LEGO set such as a castle, but the similarities ended there.

Boys then played outside of the castle imagining sword fights and epic battles, whereas girls played inside the castle, decorating rooms and imagining scenes within the space built.

These creative LEGO figures were created out of the
LEGO Friends playset pictured in the previous photo.
Photo: Maria Adcock
As such, the new playsets of LEGO Friends incorporate much more details to interior design and play spaces to foster role play versus the boy versions.

Girls also preferred more realistic LEGO figures instead of the usual block ones that boys played with.

All of these changes, while small, cumulatively helped to create a blockbuster. According to a LEGO representative, sales to girls have tripled since the launch of LEGO Friends just four months ago.

Insights and Novogratz Tips
Beyond LEGO playsets, research revealed key findings regarding kids and their rooms at home. According to a Harris poll conducted by LEGO Friends with input from Robert and Cortney Novogratz, children began taking interest in changing their rooms just after the age of five, citing more space to hang out and play as the number-one wish for their rooms.

The LEGO Friends survey stated that 71% of parents thought the design of a child’s room impacted creativity. “We’ve seen how room design can unleash a child’s creativity in our own family,” said Cortney Novogratz. “For example, it’s important to give each child their own workspace and play space filled with materials designed to help express their ideas in a productive and inspirational way like art and craft supplies and construction toys such as LEGO Friends. It’s also important to give children plenty of floor space in which to play and get creative; this gives them their own personal space in which to spread out and use their imaginations to the fullest.”

One of the kids' room in the Novogratz home included
chalk boards running from floor to ceiling and a giant pin board.
Photo: Maria Adcock
Responding to key research findings, The Novogratz recommended the following tips for creating special environments that children would find inspiring and parents would find appealing:

Survey Insight #1: The number one-request by children in bedrooms is more space to play and hang out.

The Novogratz Tip: Leave as much floor space open for playing and hanging out as possible. The way to achieve this is to center the room with a soft rug and include easy storage solutions. The most effective storage is easily-accessible to kids, where they can pull it out, play with their toys, and be able to put it back without any help. The best storage solutions do not dominate the room but cleverly do the job without taking up too much space. Kids need room to build, paint, create etc., but need supplies to do so, so keep storage solutions simple.

Even with two beds and a crib (not pictured) in the room,
there was plenty of space for the Novogratz children to play in.
Photo: Maria Adcock

Survey Insight #2: Boys (64%) and girls (66%) are equally interested in having a say in the design of their rooms.

The Novogratz Tip: Just like adults, every child wants to be in a space that makes them feel happy and secure - this goes for both boys and girls. Show children that their ideas have value by including them in the design decision-making process as much as possible, letting them offer their ideas. By making them a part of the creation of their room, children are more likely to take better care of their environment and their belongings.

Inspirations from the Novogratz children were found
throughout their bedrooms.
Photo: Maria Adcock

Survey Insight #3: Girls get excited about paint color; boys are more excited by displaying collections.

The Novogratz Tip: As far as paint color, a world without color would be pretty flat and boring.  Whether girls or boys are into color, embrace bold colors and remember to always have fun with it. The idea of a child collecting something and displaying is neat because it’s personal, shows originality and fosters pride. Fun solutions for displaying collections include: cork or pin boards to display art; Lucite shelves and boxes to display collections; simple cubed shelving units are cost effective and perfect for displaying LEGO models, trophies and other things that kids gravitate towards.

The Novogratz daughters decorated their room with plenty
of their favorite things to create a warm and inviting space.
Photo: Maria Adcock

Survey Insight #4: Blue is the most popular color choice among all children.

The Novogratz Tip: From the ocean to the sky, blue is found everywhere in nature and has a cool, calming effect. Blue is a peaceful color and a great go-to color because it comes in so many different tones and hues. It’s great in boys’ rooms, girls’ rooms, and adult rooms, too. Mix hues or use it as a contrast to other bright colors. Use it on walls or in furnishings. You can never go wrong with blue!

The bedroom of the Novogratz teen boys included plenty
of rock band instruments and a gorgeous view of the Hudson River.

The Novogratz Home
Robert and Cortney Novogratz practiced what they preach, creating inspiring spaces in their home including the bedrooms for their seven children. Their amazing home in New York City boasted views of the Hudson River, exquisite light fixtures, funky décor, and more. Here are pictures I took during my visit at their home.

What to Expect When You’re Expecting – The Movie and Jenny Craig

Opens in theaters May 18th, 2012.
Image: WhattoExpect.com
Last night I attended a private screening of the movie “What to Expect When You’re Expecting.” Sponsored by Jenny Craig, the event tied in getting your pre-baby body back with the movie.

“What to Expect When You’re Expecting” is based on the best-selling parenting guide book by Heidi Murkoff. While the book is non-fiction, the movie is 100% fiction. It follows the lives of several women and their experiences with pregnancy. The movie weaves several plots to offer diverse viewpoints, from the one-night stand pregnancy and overseas adoption to the failed-IVF couple and the “We got pregnant right away” couple.

A star-studded cast carries the movie.
Image: IMDB.com
The star-studded casts includes Jennifer Lopez as a mom adopting a baby from Ethiopia, Cameron Diaz as the fitness trainer control-freak mom, Brooklyn Decker as the “perfect” mom, Anna Kendrick as the unintentionally pregnant young girl, and Elizabeth Banks as the down-to-earth “Pregnancy Sucks!” mom. The men in the movie include Matthew Morrison, Dennis Quaid, Chace Crawford, Rodrigo Santoro, Chris Rock, Ben Falcone, Joe Mangianiello, and more.

The movie provided many chuckles, and parents will be nodding their heads relating to the scenarios. Though many of the scenes shows stereotypes of pregnant moms, they were still entertaining. It’s a feel-good movie that will illicit some tears, and overall I enjoyed it.

The movie opens today, May 18th nationwide.

New Joovy Caboose Ultralight Stand-On Tandem Stroller Makes Traveling with Two Easy

Joovy Caboose Ultralight Stand-On Tandem stroller
makes traveling with two kids fun.
Photo: Maria Adcock
Hauling two young kids whether they’re twins or siblings is no easy task. Strollers made for two are often so long or wide that parents can’t maneuver them around stores. Many are also heavy and bulky, providing parents with unintended workouts when lifting them in and out of cars.

The new Joovy Caboose Ultralight Stand-On Tandem stroller makes traveling easy as it’s the lightest, most maneuverable tandem stroller available on the market today. At only 21 pounds the Caboose Ultralight is 20% lighter than the original Caboose and much lighter than most double strollers. It even weighs less than many single strollers!

The Caboose Ultralight is so easy to push and steer that parents can do so with just one hand. The sealed ball bearing wheels provide a smooth ride for children and can easily move in any direction.

Parents with an infant and a toddler will have no problem carrying both children in this stroller. The older child can sit or stand in the back while the infant rides in the front. The tray table comes off so parents can insert a rear-facing infant seat. The stroller can accommodate many infant seat brands such as Baby Trend, Britax, Chicco, Combi, Eddie Bauer, Evenflo, Graco, Maxi Cosi, Peg Perego, and Safety 1st. Please see the Joovy website for specific infant seat models.

“I love that even with two toddlers in the stroller, it’s not too heavy to push. It rolls smoothly as well,” says Gina D. from Long Island, NY.

Comes in vivid colors such as Greenie.
Photo: Joovy
For parents with two toddlers or preschoolers, one can sit in the front and the other can ride in the back. Kids love the patented Stand-On-Tandem design since they can hop on and off easily. They enjoy that sense of independence, and when they’re tired, they can simply sit down in the seat (seat belt included). There’s also a certain “cool” factor to this stand-up option, and it can be quite the conversation starter when out and about.

The Caboose Ultralight is durable and made from tough 600D nylon fabric. It folds and unfolds easily and is quite compact for a double stroller. Note that when folded, the stroller does not stand upright so it will lie horizontally when placed on the floor.

The Joovy Caboose Ultralight Stand-On Tandem stroller comes in fun colors such as Blueberry, Brownie, Greenie, Orangie, and Black. Suggested retail price is $269.99 and can be purchase at Joovy’s website, Amazon, Walmart, Diapers.com, Toy R Us, and other retail stores.

The 1st Anniversary of Bicultural Mama - Top 5 Posts

A year ago today I launched Bicultural Mama. Back then I didn’t know what the blog would lead to – I just knew I wanted to write and blogging provided me a forum to do so. Since then I’ve learned so much about social media, the blogger community, and writing. With the growth of the blog, it has provided many opportunities to meet great people and experience new things.

Several readers have asked what posts have ranked the highest in page views over the last year. I’ve summarized the top 5 below starting with the most read post of all time.

Jessica Alba Launches Eco-Friendly Children’s Products Line with Home Delivery Service
I had the great opportunity to attend Jessica Alba’s event promoting her new line of natural and eco-friendly baby products called The Honest Company. Ranging from diapers and wipes to toiletries for the whole family, I became a fan of her philosophy and non-toxic products. This post soared to the top because Jessica Alba shared a link to my post on her Facebook page.  She has 4.5 million Facebook fans, so needless to say I experienced a huge spike in web traffic. By the way, everyone asks what she was like. I only talked to her briefly, but she was friendly. Most of all, you could tell she prided herself in being a mom first, and acting came second.

Disney Junior Premieres “Doc McStuffins” Featuring Ty Burrell from “Modern Family”
“Doc McStuffins” is a new animated Disney series that premiered on the all new 24 hour Disney Junior channel. It’s about a little girl who cares for “sick” and “injured” toys in the playhouse in her backyard. I like the fact that the main character is a person of color shown in a positive light.
My little one has been watching this show and gets excited when it comes on. She sings the song that they play on every episode and even pretends she’s a doctor with her own dolls!

The Symbolism Behind Chinese New Year Foods
I wrote this post for Chinese New Year this year. I always knew Chinese food held deep symbolism and wanted to write it all down  in one place. It’s a good reference piece and a reminder about how much food plays a part in certain cultures.

World Trade Center Observation Deck Photos Two Weeks Before 9/11
Back in August 2001 a friend and I visited the observation deck of the World Trade Center. Little did we know that two weeks later the world would change. I am grateful that I was a shutterbug and took a bunch of photos while there. I posted this for the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

PBS KIDS Summer Literacy Activities Keep Kids Minds Engaged During Break

Summer break doesn't have to mean
a break in learning.
Image: PBS KIDS
Even though summer break means there’s no school, kids don’t have to forego learning. Studies have shown that children who do not participate in educational activities over the summer lose a lot of the information they’ve learned in the past year. Teachers end up spending about 4 to 6 weeks re-teaching material when kids return in the fall. To help kids retain and build key literacy skills during summer break, PBS KIDS is offering on-air, online and mobile content and more to help bridge the summer learning gap.

The flagship event for the PBS Kids summer learning initiative is the premiere of SUPER WHY! Around the World Adventure airing June 15 that features two new episodes of SUPER WHY! – “Super Why and the Around the World Adventure” and “Super Why and Naila and the Magic Map.” Both episodes will also be available online at PBSKIDS.org/video and on the free PBS KIDS Video App for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.

New episodes from SUPER WHY! will feature adventures
from around the world to facilitate learning.
Image: PBS KIDS

In addition, PBS KIDS is offering 10 weeks of literacy-themed programming (check local listings). Each week will feature reading-related episodes from a different PBS KIDS series.

Select episodes and clips will also be featured on PBSKIDS.org/video and on the free PBS KIDS Video App for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, and games and activities will be available for kids at PBSKIDS.org/read and for parents at PBSPARENTS.org/read. Starting June 4, free episode downloads, video playlists and other downloadable content will also be available on iTunes.
The 10 week schedule includes:

  • WILD KRATTS, “Zach Attack Week” – Starting June 4 *Includes one NEW episode*
  • WORDGIRL, “Tobey’s Robot Summer” – Starting June 11 *Includes one NEW episode*
  • ARTHUR, “Baby Kate Adventure Week” – Starting June 18
  • CURIOUS GEORGE, “Monkey Business Week” – Starting June 25 *Includes one NEW episode*
  • SUPER WHY!, “Royal Reading Week” – Starting July 2
  • THE ELECTRIC COMPANY, “Prankster Planet” – Starting July 9
  • DINOSAUR TRAIN, “Gone Fishing Week” – Starting July 16
  • MARTHA SPEAKS, “Dog Daze Week” – Starting July 23 *Includes one NEW episode*
  • THE CAT IN THE HAT KNOWS A LOT ABOUT THAT!, “Creepy Crawley Week” – Starting July 30
  • SID THE SCIENCE KID, “Get Up and Move Week” – Starting August 6

Another way for kids to learn is through PBS KIDS’ partnership with iVillage to launch the iVillage PBS KIDS Summer Reading Community Challenge at ivillage.com/pbs. The challenge runs from June 18 to July 27 and includes free literacy-building resources for parents and children designed by the experts at PBS Parents and PBS KIDS.

Creative Ways to Get Kids to Eat Vegetables - Free Recipe Book “A Very Veggie World”

Kids will want to eat these fun and colorful Zucchini Boats.
Photo: Country Crock

Kids notoriously avoid vegetables, but making it fun to eat can help. Chef and mom of three Clare Crespo has written a colorful cookbook, “A Very Veggie World: A Delicious Rainbow of 25 Recipes Your Family Will Love.”

The 60 page cookbook features cute and fun ways to incorporate vegetables into kids’ meals by using a kaleidoscope of colors, flavors, and bright ideas. Examples include transforming mashed potatoes into red-pepper-striped baseballs and turning fresh spinach and tomatoes into a patriotic pizza. Other highlights include little Mushroom Gnomes accessorized with peppers and parsley, sweet-potato Bear Paws garnished with cashews, Zucchini Boats, and more.

“My son loves the Mt. Veggie Volcanoes made of sweet potatoes, Broccoli Swamp, and Hashbrains made of baked potatoes. Plus he thinks mom is cool for making them!” says Kathy C. from Deer Park, New York.

Most of these easy-to-make creations can be prepped in just 20 minutes or less, and every one produces a delicious, delightful veggie sculpture that’s fun to serve and even more fun to eat.

The cookbook stars over two dozen vegetables including a few who don’t often enjoy the spotlight such as Crocky the Caterpillar made out of beets and Veggie Wagons created with eggplants.

Traveling with a young child isn’t easy, especially if you have to lug a playpen to provide a place for her to sleep in. Hotel cribs are often rickety or germy. What’s a parent to do? Happy 5th Wedding Anniversary – Wow, have things changed!

We're celebrating our 5 year wedding anniversary. Reflecting on the last half decade together with my husband, so many life changes have taken place – but it’s all been good.

I met my husband in New York City through a mutual friend. We dated for about 1 ½ years before getting engaged.

We were married a year later with a traditional Chinese wedding reception in Michigan. It was difficult finding a venue near my parent’s home that could pull off this type of celebration, but we managed to transform a dance hall next to a Chinese restaurant into our reception center.

Some highlights since our big wedding day have included:

Buying our first home in the Long Island suburbs –The first house we put an offer on fell through after the inspection report revealed major problems, but fortunately the second house we found worked out. Things happen for a reason…

Getting featured on HGTV – The yard of our new home came in an odd triangle shape and it was almost completely barren. Considering we had no idea how to “make a yard,” I applied to the “Dear Genevieve” show on HGTV. We were chosen for a backyard makeover. Here’s a short clip from the show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPUqVkTWh_s

Purchasing a minivan – Some people may have issues with becoming a minivan mom, but I didn’t mind because I loved the convenience. Hubby loved it, too, as he used it to haul bulky gardening supplies from Home Depot.

The birth of our daughter – This was the most significant life change. Bringing a new life into the world redefined everything for me. I understood what unconditional love was, and our daughter brought so much joy into our lives.

Career change – With a new baby, we wanted to have one of us working locally in case of emergencies rather than both of us commuting to New York City. I found a job on Long Island which provided a shorter commute, but I was very unhappy there. I decided to quit and take the plunge to pursue a second career in freelance writing. This was something I had always thought about doing, but never thought I could. Thankfully my husband was supportive of me and my goals. The career change allowed me to spend more time with my daughter while working at home. It was a good move, because now everything just feels right.

I’d like to tell my husband Happy 5th Anniversary, and I love you very much! I look forward to many more years building our lives together.

Eighty percent of American moms today think motherhood is more complicated than it was 20 years ago. While they may feel stressed out and busy almost 9 out of 10 moms believe they’re doing a better job balancing it all than their mothers did.

These insights and more resulted from the national “Ivory Moms Survey” conducted this past November. Commissioned by Procter & Gamble’s Ivory brand, the survey strived to understand the everyday attitudes and insights regarding today's moms.

The survey included more than 1,000 moms and revealed many surprising findings highlighted below.
  • Hot Mom vs. Cool Mom: 77% would rather be the “cool mom” than the “hot mom.”
  • Moms are Overwhelmed: 66% of moms have hid in their bathroom just for some alone time.
  • Even Downtime Counts: Today, 74% of moms feel like they need to make every outing and activity a learning opportunity for their kids.
  • The Facebook Mom: According to moms on Facebook, the most annoying type of parent on Facebook is the parent that’s always complaining (25%). This is followed only by the parents who brag (24%) and parents who over-share (20%). If you think that new photo album is going to annoy your friends, don’t worry; only 8% think the picture-happy parents are most annoying.
  • Taxes vs. Homework: 61% of moms with children in middle school and 68% of moms with children in high school think their child’s homework is harder than doing their taxes.
  • Working vs. Stay-at-home Mom: 83% of full-time working moms think they have the harder gig, and 60% of stay-at-home moms believe their job is more difficult.
  • Smelly vs. Whiner: According to moms, it’s worse to have your kid known as “The Smelly Kid” (43%). They would even prefer their kid be known as “The Potty Mouth” (20%), “The Whiner” (17%), or “The Snob” (13%).
Parenting Advice:
  • Moms say they receive parenting advice an average of 3 times a week, whether they ask for it or not.
  • Of course advice comes from the traditional sources: family (62%) and friends (55%).
  • However, in the age of the information highway, there’s an information overload; 41% of moms under 40 get advice from blogs, Twitter and Facebook.
  • While most moms are seeking out suggestions, 1 in 12 moms receive unwelcome counsel from complete strangers (8%).
The Realities of Modern-day Motherhood:
  • The first thing moms had to compromise on when they first became a mother was time for their own activities and hobbies (27%), followed closely by their looks or body (22%) and time with friends (18%).
  • Moms say the most complicated aspect of being a mom today is just finding alone time (31%).
  • Unfortunately, when balancing parenting and their personal life, the person most likely to get shortchanged in their family is mom (53%).
  • The best teacher moms have is their own mother, and they’ve learned well. 87% think they are doing an as-good or better job balancing their life as a mom than their own mom.
  • Most of us have taken a solo bike ride alone as a kid, but today, 2 in 5 (41%) mothers would never let their child do the same.
  • 53% of moms would not let their child go to a friend’s house if they hadn’t met or talked with the friend’s parents first.
