Baby Safety: Nursing Covers that Block Radiation and More

Disclosure: I received product samples to assess. All opinions stated are solely my own.

With a newborn in our house, baby safety is always top of mind. Hot off the heels of National Baby Safety Month, here are a couple of products I tried out with my daughter that aim to protect and comfort baby.

Belly Armor Nursing Cover

For breastfeeding moms, nursing covers are a must-have. Belly Armor has elevated the standard nursing cover by making one that products baby from radiation. Made from a patented RadiaShield® technology, it blocks 99.9% of everyday radiation caused by cell phones, laptops, tablets, and other electronic devices and household appliances.

As busy moms, we’re always multitasking so that means doing things like checking our Smartphones or writing emails while taking care of baby. Why does radiation matter? The Environmental Health Trust and many other organizations worldwide have issued precautionary warnings about the health risks of cell phone use and exposure to radiation emitted from carrying/using cell phones and other electronic devices.

The Belly Armor Nursing Cover feels like a regular nursing cover – even though it has “armor” in its name, it is not stiff or ugly. It is easy to pull over your head and there is plenty of material for coverage (31” x 33”). The neck strap is easy to adjust, and it’s machine washable, too.

Belly Armor’s nursing covers retail for $49.00. Pregnant but baby hasn’t arrived yet? Check out Belly Armor’s protective blankets ($69.00-$109.00) and bands (for the baby in the womb) ($59.00). For more information as well as store locations, please visit www.BellyArmor.com.

aden + anais Swaddles

Swaddling babies is important for their safety. It reduces the risk of SIDS; The CJ Foundation recommends removing all loose bedding from the crib. Swaddling also makes babies feel secure as it mimics the snugness in the womb. As a result, babies tend to sleep better.

I tried out the aden+ anais’ 100% cotton muslin swaddles ($22.00-$54.95). They’re stylish and breathable so they help safely regulate baby’s body temperature. Not only can they be used for swaddling, but also as a stroller cover and more.

I’ve tried many swaddle blankets, and aden + anais provides the largest size at 47 x 47 that I’ve found (pre-washed to minimize shrinking). From my experience, the larger size is better so you can adequately wrap the blanket around the baby and tuck in the end to stay extra secure. The material is lightweight and not bulky. The material is soft, and with muslin, it only gets softer with each wash.

One caution is that if you have a wiggly, escape artist baby who tends to find a way to get her arms out (like my baby), the swaddle blanket may not keep baby in the entire night. You have to make the swaddle very tight, and even then a very strong baby may still break free. However, if your baby is not an escape artist (my first baby was fine in blanket swaddles), then these swaddle blankets are a great alternative to the bulkier, stiffer cotton ones from other manufacturers.

aden + anais swaddles come in Classic (muslin), bamboo and merino wool. They also make sleeping bag blankets ($32.00-$39.95). These are a great alternative to traditional blankets which babies tend to kick off in the middle of the night.
