Disclosure: Bicultural Mama was invited to this event. All opinions are Bicultural Mama’s.
Although I get invited to many blogger events, I rarely can go. Between having a baby in the last year, commuting time, and babysitter and transportation costs, the cost benefit ratio doesn’t pan out. But I made an exception this week for the Disney Social Media Moms On-the-Road 2015 event in New York City, and it was well worth it.
The Disney Social Media Moms On-the-Road program is a way for Disney Parks to reach mom bloggers coast to coast and inform them of exciting Disney programs and plans. The event also includes dynamic speakers and interactive sessions to help bloggers improve their brand and social media presence.
When Disney holds an event, it does it right. Just like at its theme parks, Disney goes beyond your expectations to ensure customer satisfaction. For the New York City event, the conference was held at the gorgeous New Amsterdam Theatre in Times Square – the current Broadway home of the musical, Aladdin. Bloggers sat on stage during the event, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
Below are highlights from this half day event.
Paint the Night Parade
The new Paint the Night Parade at Disneyland launched in May as part of its Disneyland Diamond Celebration (60 years!). The parade continues to awe guests with its amazing use of lights and technology.

How does Disney Parks celebrate this huge milestone? With this very cool video.
Disney Cruise Lines New York City Port 2016
Beginning in Fall 2016, Disney Cruise Lines will be sailing from New York City to bring guests to Walt Disney World and its private island Disney Castaway Cay in the Bahamas.
Tangled: The Musical on Disney Cruise Lines
Guest on Disney Cruise Lines can enjoy watching Tangled: The Musical starting in November 2015. It’s like watching a Broadway show on the open seas!
The event lined up several amazing guest speakers to inspire and teach bloggers about social media and branding.
Jenn Fickley-Baker – Social Media Manager at Disney Parks
Ms. Fickley-Baker has the huge job of planning, writing and editing the Disney Parks blog and implementing its social media. Her tips included “listing” or taking 10-12 approaches to the same story. She recommended pushing past logic because that’s where creativity begins. Don’t forget to play like a kid (creativity sparks), also always ask “What If?” and remember that how a story is told matters.
Victoria Lim – Multimedia Journalist, Trainer and Consultant
Ms. Lim spoke about creating visual content with ease. She showed impressive stats of how visuals can increase engagement in social media (104% increase in engagement on Facebook!) and showed bloggers cool video apps such as Videolicious and Magisto. Want to access additional features on Magisto.com? Just enter code magistotrial12 in the Redeem Coupon box on the website (thanks, Victoria!).
Greg Josken – Digital Marketing and Social Media Manager at Disney Theatrical Group
Mr. Josken spoke about how the Disney Theatrical Group increased social media mentions with tactics such as providing an Aladdin Magic Lamp prop to theater goers so they could take selfies with it (70%+ increased in mentions!). He also spoke about how the group strengthened brand affinity through playlist sessions and music videos.
Editors from Babble.com provided many helpful social media tips. They recommended posting more than just links such as including shareables like photos and charts that can increase engagement. Use short, clear and engaging copy. Keep your look consistent in Instagram, and don’t forget photo quality is key. In Pinterest, use descriptive copy to tell a story which is also great for guided searches using keywords.
Marissa Kraxberger – Vice President of Creative for Ivanka Trump
Ms. Kraxberger handles the social media, branding and more for Ivanka Trump. She reviewed how she helped to overhaul Ivanka’s image. Known in the past for her Celebrity Apprentice and modeling days, today Ivanka Trump is best known as a loving mom, fashion designer, and supporter of working women.
Barby Siegel – CEO of Zeno Group
Ms. Siegal spoke about how being FEARLESS helped the Zeno Group acquire the Starbucks PR account when it was a then smaller company competing against big name firms. She recalled how being fearless has been an asset throughout her career and encouraged bloggers to be fearless with pursuits and goals.
After the event bloggers went on a behind-the scenes tour of the theater, including visiting the prop room and trying on costumes from the many musicals that have played there. It was exciting to try on the lioness mask from The Lion King, view the rose used in Beauty and the Beast, and try on costumes from The Little Mermaid and Mary Poppins. Thank you Disney Parks for this amazing experience!
