Did you know that blue light emitted from electronic devices can negatively effect health? A report by The Vision Council states that 65% of Americans (including kids) have experienced symptoms caused by digital eye strain. These include dry, irritated eyes, blurred vision, eye fatigue, neck and back pain, and headaches.
Blue light penetrates deep into the eye which can cause retina damage and vision problems like cataracts. It can also suppress melatonin, thus disrupting sleep patterns. Harvard Health Publications notes: “Blue wavelengths—which are beneficial during daylight hours because they boost attention, reaction times, and mood—seem to be the most disruptive at night. And the proliferation of electronics with screens, as well as energy-efficient lighting, is increasing our exposure to blue wavelengths, especially after sundown.”
The Harvard Health Publications also states that one way to address the negative effects is to avoid bright screens beginning two to three hours before bed. While this makes sense, it’s not always practical. For example, I do most of my work — which involves using a laptop — after the kids are asleep. When I finally do get to bed, I often use my Kindle to catch up on news and read emails. As a result, I’m exposed to a lot of blue light prior to bedtime. I’ve noticed that my sleep has been less restful, and even though I may be tired, I can’t always fall asleep easily.
In the past I’ve purchased clear adhesive screen covers meant to block out blue light. But the covers aren’t always available in the correct size for my devices or they lose their stickiness over time. Given that our family owns many devices, we’d also have to purchase separate covers for all of them.
Recently I discovered another option to block out blue light. Blueberry Glasses are fun, colorful eyewear for the whole family that protects eyes from the harmful blue light that illuminates from phones, computers, and tablets. They are also available with or without magnifying reader lenses. The lenses of Blueberry Glasses are made out of CR-39 and are not tinted, but made with BLP Technology. BLP Lens© technology blocks 100% of UV rays and 40% of the blue light spectrum, and the special BLP Lens technology has been created by Menrad.
The major benefit of Blueberry Glasses is that I can use this one item with multiple devices (rather than purchasing multiple protective covers for all my devices). It’s portable, stylish, and easy to use whether I’m watching TV, reading on my Kindle, working on my laptop or scrolling through my Smartphone.
Blueberry Glasses come in four shapes and 11 colors. They’re suitable for both adults and children. While no specific children glasses exist, a small size pair could fit a child around 6 years old. For perspective, at 10 years old a child’s head is 96% of its adult size. At 13 years old, children are generally their full, adult size; this is why a lot of children can wear adult model lenses. The difference between the small model and large model is only 5 millimeters (around 1/5 inch). The shape is more important than the size when choosing Blueberry Glasses.
Of course, using glasses with children really depends on the individual child. Will the child care for the glasses properly? Is the child mature enough to avoid breaking them? I allowed my daughter to try my pair — tortoise color in size medium. The glasses fit her, and she thought it was cool to wear them.
Regarding effectiveness, I noticed that I was able to fall asleep normally when I wore the Blueberry Glasses. However, on a couple of nights, I did forget to put them on. Perhaps not coincidentally, I ended up struggling to fall asleep. I also noticed the next morning that I felt less rested. While not a scientific experiment, the Blueberry Glasses seemed to help me.
Blueberry Glasses (non-readers) retail for $59. Readers retail for $69. The reading glasses are available with the following magnifications: Easy Focus (+0.5), Soft Power (+1.0), Soft Power (+1.5), and Soft Power (+2.0). Sizes for all glasses are Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large. Blueberry Glasses come with a soft cleaning cloth. Lenses are scratch resistant, anti-glare, anti-reflective, dust proof, easy to clean, protects from UV rays, includes flex hinges, and are lightweight.
