Decorating your child’s room is fun, but wouldn’t it be great if it provided an educational aspect too? That’s the premise behind Pictureta whose motto is “Decorate and Educate.”
Katya Belitskiy, a mom of one and graphic designer, founded Pictureta after struggling to find nursery art decor that were both cute and educational. As a result, she designed a world map that would give her Ukrainian-American son a global perspective.
After receiving much positive feedback, she expanded the line. Now her bilingual world maps feature Chinese, Italian, and Russian languages. The website also offers other world maps, throw pillows, and personalized items.
Belitskiy explains to Bicultural Mama, “I believe that children’s room decor shouldn’t be just cute, it also has to be educational and inspirational. Cute decor is not enough to help children with early childhood visual and cognitive development. As parents we should create an environment in our children’s rooms that will have a long term meaning — something that child will see and be able to interact with, while learning from it. Life is about experiences, and as parents there is no reason not to create positive, playful and educational experiences from very early on.”
We received an English-Chinese bilingual world map from Pictureta. As I unrolled the map from its mailer, I noticed its high quality paper stock and printing quality. The map was printed on satin finish photo paper so it wasn’t too glossy or dull.My eldest daughter attends Chinese School on the weekends, so this bilingual world map was a great way to reinforce the language. We hung it up in her room. She loved the fun and kid-friendly illustrations that included landmarks and animals representative of their geography. For example, Asia featured the Great Wall of China, and Antarctica included adorable penguins. The map provided a “big picture” view so it displayed each continent and ocean in both English and Chinese (it did not identify countries).
Though the map is ideal for children ages 0-5 years, it’s relevant to any child interested in languages or global awareness. The bilingual world maps come with a choice of blue or white background. It’s available in three sizes: 16×24, 24×36, and 36×54. The maps make a great gift for showers, births, birthdays, holidays, or any special occasion. As a bonus, select world maps can be personalized with the location of the child’s birthplace.
