When it comes to traveling with your family, road trips are an inexpensive way to travel around. They allow for greater flexibility since you can leave when you want and stop as often as you need to. Besides that, you’re able to save money on airfare. There are also plenty of places off the beaten path that you can explore when you take your own vehicle or rent a car instead of using public or commercial transportation.
Here are 5 road trips to take the family on in Europe.
Starting in Frankfurt, this is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Germany and it’s well worth spending the day exploring this on foot. The kids will love hearing all about the Kings and Queens of the past. At night, you can learn more about the history of this town by taking the Night Watchman’s Tour which is suitable for all ages.
Heading to Munich next, make sure you visit towards the end of the year. The kids will love the Christmas Markets, and there are all types of sweets, rides and fun activities for the whole family.
Certainly spend at least a few days exploring Rome, also known as the Eternal City. This is particularly great for older kids who will appreciate the opportunity they have to immerse themselves in ancient Roman history. The must-see places to add to your list in Rome are the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Pantheon, and the Trevi Fountain.
There are so many places to visit in France with your kids that it’s impossible to narrow down the selection. However it should always begin in Paris to see the Eiffel Tower – this is a must for any family. After Paris, make your way to the seaport of Marseille which houses two historical forts (what kids don’t like castles?). From Marseille, head towards Strasbourg. Strasbourg features a 300-year-old astronomical clock which will wow both adults and kids.
This country is famous for things like clocks and chocolates. Zurich is a great place for families to start in. It’s famous for chocolates and swans and is sure to pique any kid’s interest. Make sure you visit all the chocolate shops in town. However, be careful as these shops will easily tempt you to empty your wallet. From there, head to Lucerne where you can journey to the top of Mount Pilatus in a cable car and take in the beauty of Lake Lucerne.
One of the most popular tourist attractions in Ireland that’s also great for the whole family is the Cliffs of Moher. Not only are the views absolutely incredible, but kids will love hearing about the history of the place. Nature and animal-loving kids will have fun hearing about how people use to collect bird eggs taken from the walls of the cliffs.
Another part of Ireland where you can find fun for the whole family is in Killarney. Here, you can find Killarney National Park in which you can access the Muckross Abbey, Ross Castle, and Traditional Farms. It also offers miles of walking trails that will take you through some of the most beautiful parts of Southwest Ireland. From there you can also take day road trips to the many farms open for visitors.
