Kids are naturally curious, so it’s no surprise they’ll ask tons of questions. This was the case with Ruben Watson, an educator by day and author by night. When his young daughter kept asking him questions about the grandfather she never met, it sparked a book idea.
His picture book, Where Is My Grandpa? follows a young girl named Savannah who longs to learn more about her deceased grandpa. She asks her father question after question in order to develop a fuller picture of who her grandpa was. She feels sad that she’ll never to be able to meet him, but finds comfort in learning about his life.
Written in rhyming pattern, the author writes the book through the perspective of the young girl. Sample verses include:
“Where is my grandpa?
Does he have any pets?
What is her favorite color?
Daddy, if you tell me, I promise I won’t forget!”
The book provides an opportunity for children to explore and discuss their own family histories. It’s a great jumping off point for parents to teach their kids about their ancestry, traditions, and more. Learning more about their family histories can provide kids with a sense of where they came from and who they are today.
